Thanks, Shari! The Tooth Fairy has been VERY busy at our house!!! She's lost 3 teeth since we've had her (she started on the plane!) and has another loose one! Have you had any updates at all?
OMG Jennifer.....She's beautiful!!! And what an awesome birthday cake! Did you make it? I know you must be so happy to have your daughter home finally :-)
Thanks, Christine! Yes, I made the cake. Well, I modified some box mixes... I really like making the kids' cakes, although I don't think I'm really saving any money. Oh, well!
Wow! When I first saw your comment I thought you must be a family from our agency that adopted a little boy named Joshua that month, but when I contacted her she told me that she had run into another family also adopting a boy named Joshua! That's crazy:) I would love to get into contact with you. I really don't know if there is another way except my e-mail is jroberts@neo.rr.com. I hope you see this and e-mail me! Thanks!
Um, cake. 2- 10 inch layers (each requires a whole box of cake mix) and 2- 8 inch layers. You can use any flavor. I prefer white with almond extract added to the batter. I make the layers ahead of time and freeze them to save time. The day of the party, layer the 10 inch rounds with filling in between (I use strawberry or raspberry pie filling plain or stirred into a tub of cool whip, or melted choc. chips stirred into cool whip). Frost with white buttercream (I make homemade - I think it's about 1 cup crisco creamed, mix in about 10 cups powdered sugar, 1/2 pint heavy whipping cream, 1 tsp. salt, lots of almond extract). Layer the 8 inch layers on top with filling between and finish frosting. For this cake I used decorative frosting in a spray can that comes with the decorative tips - this was by far the easiest and best way I've found to add borders! I also used colored melting choc. disks for the dots and store bought sugar flowers that happened to match the flowers in the tablecloth perfectly.
I've used this structure for a lot of cakes. It makes anything look more exciting to use tiered layers. One cake I made like this was a bright yellow sesame street cake with primary colored borders, stripes and zig-zag lines going down the sides and crayon candles pressed into the sides of the cakes. I turned out really cute. I've also done one that was purple with choc. molded into star shapes for a Hannah Montana party and another with paw prints for a dog/cat party - VERY versatile!
Mylie's smile is so precious. I am so happy for you guys. I hope the start of school goes well for your family. Is Mylie excited about starting school?

I adopted my son, Joshua, from Uzbekistan in October 2007. Would love to find out where you live and share stories.
